Instantly Rathnasiri became the star of that school by winning the “Old Island's best Debater Award” & this was the first time for the school (Ananda Collage - Colombo).
Young Rathnasiri managed to study with difficulties & was 2 points short to secure a seat in the Law Collage.
Future was uncertain, as Rathnasiri was not blessed with money to proceed with alternative avenues for further education!
Rathnasiri was always passionate in social service & he decided to volunteer in teaching poor kids in his neighborhood.
Rathnasiri formed a small organisation called “SARANA” (help) with the support of few other young friends mainly to fight against alcohol & drug abuse in the society which was a main driver for poverty & violence at that time.
Rathnasiri's social work was recognised by the Mayor of Colombo Hon: V.A Sugathadasa & requested Rathnasiri to join with him to serve the community.
After the Mayor's death, he joined with one of the leading community leader's of all time Mr.R.Premadasa's “Sucharitha” (Discipline) campaign & later serve as the General Secretary.
Rathnasiri admired Mr.Premadasa as his mentor, who later became the President of Sri Lanka, which appointed Rathnasiri as the vice chairman of the National Water Supply & Drainage Board
Mr. Rathnasiri start building relationships around the world & gained their support to provide drinking water facilities through out Sri Lanka within a record time.
His hard work was appreciated by the community of Sri Lanka & the President later requested him to contest for the upcoming Colombo Mayor's election in 1991.
